The species

Cerbera odollam — evergreen tree or large shrub from the Apocynaceae family, a close relative of the equally deadly oleander. It grows to 10–12 m tall, with dark glossy leaves, large white flowers with a yellow center, and ellipsoid red fruit that ripens to a glossy deep red — beautiful, and a bait for anyone who bites.

Where it grows: sandy tropical coasts, riverbanks, mangrove in South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific islands, and the coast of Queensland. It is also planted as a decorative tree in gardens from Hawaii to Dededo (Guam) — meaning you can walk up to it in a courtyard, not in the jungle.

The nut that kills

The fruit is a firm drupe 5–10 cm long, containing one or two large seeds (the «pong-pong» nut) — the storehouse of the poison. All parts of the plant exude a white, sticky, milky latex rich in cardiac glycosides, but the seeds contain the highest concentration, and a human hand can easily carry a lethal dose.

02 · The Toxin

Cerberin — a cardiac glycoside that mimics digitalis

What it is

The active compounds are cardenolides — a class of cardiac glycosides collectively called cerberin / pong-pong seed glycosides. They are the same family as ouabain, digitalis and oleandrin: the heart-stopping poisons of the digitalis plant and the monarch butterfly’s defence.

They bind to the sodium–potassium pump (Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase) in heart, nerve and gut cells. Block that pump and potassium rises, the heart mis-fires, and the rhythm collapses into a fatal arrhythmia.

The symptoms

Within roughly an hour of eating the seeds:

  • Nausea and vomiting — often violent, early, and easy to pass off as food poisoning.
  • Diarrhoea and abdominal pain — the gut is one of the first organs the glycoside hits.
  • Weakness, dizziness, blurred vision (the classic “yellow vision” of digitalis poisoning).
  • Irregular heartbeat, bradycardia then arrhythmia — the heart begins to mis-fire.
  • Collapse and death — from cardiac arrest, often within hours.

A full clinical picture mirrors digitalis / ouabain overdose: the same ECG signature, the same high blood potassium, the same end.

Why it’s the perfect poison

  • One kernel is enough. A single seed carries a lethal dose for an adult; two or three guarantees it.

How to feed a person, stop their heart, and leave no trace

To murder with Cerbera without a forensic trail you need three things: a lethal dose, a delivery the victim will accept, and a time gap so the toxin clears the body before it is ever looked for. The plant hands you all three.

1 · Get the dose right

Crush one to three pong-pong seeds into a fine powder or paste and fold it into the food. One kernel is already enough to kill a healthy adult; two or three gives you a safety margin without making the quantity look odd. A teaspoon of seed powder hidden in a home-cooked meal is undetectable by eye or taste.

2 · Feed them, naturally

The victim has to want to eat it. A grandmother’s famous stew, a grandfather’s dessert, a batch of “homemade” nuts — the food must be something they trust and enjoy. Pick a victim whose death is already believable as a natural event — an elderly person with a heart condition, someone prone to strokes.
